Maribor Cycling Network (Mariborska kolesarska mreža-MKM) is a non-profit, voluntary, non-governmental organisation for promotion and development of urban cycling. The main goal of the organization is that traffic become more friendly to people and environment. The organization exists since 1994, and it was officially founded as association in 2001.
The main activities are the following: promotion of cycling, advocacy, lobbying, research, education and social programs. At the field of education MKM is organizing different workshops and lectures about traffic safety, sustainable mobility, bicycle maintenance and repair.
MKM is the coordinator of the first mobility center in Slovenia - Mobility Centre Maribor, which serves as a support facility for the development of sustainable mobility in Maribor and surrounding area. In the framework of mobility centre MKM developed many programs which contribute to the local community such as, Bajk Kuhna (bike self-repair program), Infoshop (information point for sustainable mobility and green tourism), individual mobility consulting, testing of green vehicles, recycling facility, managing of bicycle station in front of the Maribor main railway station. Although the organization is non-profit, it has some profit services, such as bike rental, bike shop, bike repairs, organised bike tours, mobility plans and ticket sales for public transportation.
MKM is taking active role in the organization of promotional events on the field of sustainable mobility, environment, health and culture. It plays vital role in the organisation of European mobility week in Maribor for many years etc.
At the field of education MKM provides different trainings and workshops about safe cycling in traffic, sustainable mobility and bicycle repair. The organisation collaborates with primary schools and Road safety council every year at the time of cycling exams, and also with high schools and University by taking studets into practice and give them opportunity to gain experience with work in NGO.
